She had blue skin,
And so did he.
He kept it hid
And so did she.
They searched for blue
Their whole life through,
Then passed right by -
And never knew
-Shel Silverstein
There are many reasons we fail to act with authenticity: Protecting ourselves against rejection. Providing a blanket of privacy for ourselves and those we love. Avoiding burdening others.
It takes a great deal of vulnerability and courage to act with authenticity. We have to show our whole selves, knowing if we are greeted with dismay and disinterest, our true nature that has been judged - and not just a facade. We have to value connection over privacy for some moments. We have to risk we may make others uncomfortable.
But I am convinced if we fail to show our true colors, we will never gain the connections we desire. For to be truly loved is to be understood - and no one can understand us if we hide what is at our core.
May we all have the courage to take off our masks. For what lies under them is amazing, powerful, and worthy of love.
